Benjamin Woolley (1819-1868)

Son of George Woolley, surgeon of Brompton, Middlesex, Benjamin was one of several brothers who went into illustrious careers. A naval officer, Benjamin was also the grandfather of Richard van der Riet Woolley, Astronomer Royal and director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1956 to 1971. Benjamin’s nephew, Charles Webster Rede Gell-Woolley, married Edith Blanche Attfield in 1894.
